The Operation Pulo Shield in the Niger Delta has said its troops have raided pirates and kidnappers’ hideouts in the region and recovered cache of arms and ammunition.
It also said the troops arrested scores of suspects as well as destroyed some illegal refineries during their various raids in the region last week.
The Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre, OPS, Lt. Col. Ado Isa, said in a statement on Tuesday that troops of the Sector 2 of the outfit had commenced massive raids on perceived militants and pirates’ camps and recovered arms and ammunition.
He said some of the notable areas raided by troops included Abonema general area in Rivers State where one AK 47 automatic rifle with registration number T94950 and two magazines loaded with ammunition were recovered.Isa said the troops while escorting oil company workers from Tebidaba flowstation encountered gunmen suspected to be sea pirates.
He said the gunmen on sighting the troops discarded their weapons into the sea and escaped into the nearby forest.
The JMCC coordinator said, “Two speedboats, one AK 47 riffle loaded with 41 rounds of ammunition were recovered and currently in custody of Operation Pulo Shield.
“A suspected sea pirates’ camp around Ikembiri community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State was also raided.
“The pirates fled the camp before the arrival of the troops. Items recovered at the camp were two pairs of camouflage uniforms, two sawing machines, one national identity card and a chain saw. “
In the same vein, Isa said troops of Sector 2 in conjunction with Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Southern Ijaw Oil and Gas Task Force conducted a joint operation at Gbenekrukru general area in Southern Ijaw LGA of Bayelsa and destroyed five illegal oil bunkering sites.
He said suspected oil thieves operated with four drums containing crude oil, one metal tank containing Automated Gas Oil and five Cotonou boats containing stolen products.
He said other items discovered at the site were seven pumping machines and 24 empty tanks, adding that the sites and the items were destroyed in line with the mandate of OPS.
He said during an operation, three suspected criminals were also arrested in Nembe in possession of one locally-made pistol and substance suspected to be cocaine.
He said the suspects and the items were in custody of the outfit for onward transfer to relevant prosecuting agency.
Isa added, ” In the anti-illegal oil bunkering operation, troops of Sector 1 of the OPS carried out land trotting and sea patrol along Oboegungun, Otumara, Chanomi and Saghara communities near Escravos in Delta State.
“During the operation, the troops discovered four illegal bunkering sites where oil thieves operated with 10 ovens, eight dug-out pits and five surface metal tanks filled with products suspected to be stolen crude oil. Other items discovered were four pumping machines and other illegal bunkering equipment.
“The sites and the discovered items were destroyed immediately at the location. Troops of the sector deployed in Ogirishi in Delta State arrested one Mr. Progress Ojusin and Mrs Faith Binikuo riding in a red Audi car with number plate AA 630 GRE used for illegal bunkering activities. A tanker loaded with suspected adulterated kerosine was also intercepted and arrested at Aviele in Etsako LGA of Edo State.”
The OPS spokesman also said troops of the sector arrested two Mack tankers with registration number Lagos APP 521 XA and Lagos EKY 179 XQ along Benin-Lagos bypass at Ahor in Ununmwonde LGA of Delta State carrying about 45,000 and 40,000 respectively of diesel suspected to be illegally refined.
He said five suspects were arrested on board the trucks, noting that both the trucks and the suspects were in custody of 4 Brigade Garrison, Delta, for further action.
He said the troops of Sector 4 recorded success as a black and blue truck with registration XC 980 WWR Delta loaded with about 1500 litres of locally refined diesel in three fabricated tanks were arrested by the troops along Imo State gate.
He said three suspects were also arrested, stressing that the suspects and the truck were in custody of OPS for preliminary investigation.
