NCC sanctioned the service provider for failing to meet a deadline to disconnect 5.2 million unregistered subscribers earlier this year.

The case of the N1.4 trillion fine imposed on MTN Nigeria, by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) is before President Buhari for consideration. This was revealed to newsmen, by the Minister of Communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu. Shittu said “The good thing is that MTN did not contest the fact that they had violated the regulations and guidelines. They never contested it. They admitted they were at fault. They apologized for their role in the saga and they made a commitment that what happened will never happen again. And of course, they made a plea for review of the payment terms.” Adding that “The issue is now before Mr President. He will take the necessary decision at the appropriate time. And the President would do what is best for the public interest.“ “I don’t think there is any conflicting position on where government stands on the MTN issue. Recall that there were violations which were established against MTN,” Shittu said. The 36 state Governors in Nigeria, recent...

Report accuses company of stoking violence in Africa through dealings with separatist groups

On Monday, Global Witness released a report condemning the actions of the Canadian company Kilimanjaro Capital Ltd. The report, written by Global Witness, accuses Kilimanjaro Capital Ltd. of purchasing billions in oil and mineral assets from secessionist groups across sub-Saharan Africa from 2012 to 2014. Among the nations listed were Angola, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria. The report argues that the opaque nature of these dealings may have incentivised violent conflict across. For example, the deal struck in Cameroon included a clause requiring the separatist group to achieve “full independence” encouraged the separatist group to ignore peaceful methods of settling their grievances. Kilimanjaro argued that all funds they dispersed were earmarked for education, diplomacy, humanitarian, and legal purposes. However, Global Witness noted that the many of the separatist movements which signed deals with Kilimanjaro have violent histories. According to the Global Witness report, the ...

Nigeria Braces Up For Retaliation As UK Deports 500 Nigerians Today

Nigerians at home are currently bracing for a blazing diplomatic row with Britain as the United Knigdom plans to deport over 500 Nigerians who have been resident in that country today. For over two weeks now, the affected Nigerians in the UK have been crying out to the Nigerian Government to come their rescue, but it appears their cry for help has fallen on deaf ears. Some of these Nigerians are married to British nationals, and deporting now will mean that they may never get to see their families and loved ones in the UK again. Sad enough too, the Nigerian Government has been uncomfortably silent on the allegation of Nigerian High Commission officials in the UK taking £3,000 bribe from UK officials to issue travel certificates to the affected Nigerians. The families of the affected Nigerians at home here are wondering why the government is not taking any action on the issue, when of course,it is common knowledge that the British Government will never condone its own citizens...

We have recovered some stolen funds from Jonathan government officials, says Buhari

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed that some persons who served under the Goodluck Jonathan's administration have started to refund part of their loot in office. This followed months of speculation that former officials of government had volunteered to return such stolen public money as a way to get soft-landing in the hands of the present administration. Addressing Nigerians residents in Tehran, the capital of Iran where he attended a summit of Gas Exporting Exporting Forum (GECF), he also explained why those accused of corruption had not been charged to court, saying that it was due to the need to gather enough evidence against them. He however assured that proper investigation was being done to get the evidence to begin their prosecution soon. Buhari pointed out that it was easier for him to deal with corrupt people when he was a military head of state in 1985 when it was possible to arrest culprits and put them in protective custody compared to now where he must adher...

Russian pilot captured by Syrian rebels after Turkey downs Russian war plane

Two pilots have been ejected from downed plane and one captured by Syria rebels, AFP has reported. NATO member Turkey on Tuesday shot down a Russian fighter jet on the Syrian border, threatening a major spike in tensions between two key protagonists in the four-year Syria civil war. The Turkish presidency said in a statement that the plane was a Russian Su-24 fighter jet, while Turkish media said one pilot had been captured by rebel forces in Syria. Moscow confirmed that one of its planes had been shot down, but said the pilots’ fate remained unclear. The Turkish army said that the plane had violated Turkish airspace 10 times within a five minute period and was shot down by two Turkish F-16s. However Russia insisted that the plane was inside Syrian airspace. “A Russian Su-24 plane was downed under the rules of engagement because it violated the Turkish airspace despite the warnings,” the Turkish presidency said. Reports said two pilots had ejected from the plane and Turkish...

Our correspondent reliably gathered that the yet to be identified gunmen were said to have stormed the Madala market and made straight to a shop believed to be that of some Igbo traders and ordered them to recite the Holy Quran of which they could not. The gunmen who were not satisfied with the development opened fire on the five people at close range leaving them dead immediately. An alarm which was raised by other traders close to the shop where the five people were killed attracted passers by who sent a distress call to the Divisional Police Officer Suleja where a detachment of armed police were drafted to the scene.
