Why Tribunal nullified Akwa Ibom state election.

The Akwa Ibom State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, yesterday, cancelled the governorship election results in 18 local government areas, LGAs, in the state. According to the tribunal, section 108(2) of the Electoral Act, empowered it to, in view of circumstances that surrounded the governorship election in the 18 LGAs, nullify the outcome  and order INEC to organise a re-run. Specifically, it listed the LGAs where INEC must conduct a re-run poll as: Etim-Ekpo, Uyo, Ibesikpo, Onna, Ikono, Oruk-Anam, Uruan, Ibeno, Ibiono Ibom, Nsit-Ibom, Nsit-Ubium, Ini, Oron, Nsit-Atai, Etinan, Udun...

I wont run for presidency says Biden; US vice president

Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday he will not run for the White House in 2016, ending months of speculation that has stalked Hillary Clinton’s campaign and threatened Democratic party unity. Pointing to the tyranny of America’s electoral calendar, the two-time presidential hopeful reluctantly relinquished a long-held political dream and in doing so removed a potentially sizable obstacle to Clinton’s nomination. Joe Biden “I believe we’re out of time, the time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination,” Biden said in an emotion-tinged statement at the White House, flanked by his wife Jill and the man he had hoped to replace, President Barack Obama. Biden’s months of soul searching and deliberation have coincided with mourning for his late son Beau, who succumbed to brain cancer in May. In 1972, weeks after being elected a lawmaker, Biden lost his wife and baby daughter in a car crash that also left his two young sons badly injured. Biden took his Sen...

Don’t Cry for Bola Tinubu By Femi Aribisala.

The Jagaban of Borgu has been slain politically upon his high places. How are the mighty fallen! Many monuments have been built in honour of the man Bola Tinubu. He is acclaimed as the political genius of our times who not only engineered the taming of the PDP juggernaut, he caged it and confined it to the backwaters of Otuoke. Since the APC defeat of the PDP in the presidential election, Tinubu the tactician has been feted, celebrated and praised to high heavens. But all these encomiums have proved to be highly exaggerated. The truth of the matter is that Tinubu, the veritable Jagaban of Borgu, is a master of political illusion. He is remarkable for the distinction of characteristically pulling defeat out of the jaws of putative victory. He mid-wifed the birth of the APC, only to be shut out of its vice-presidential sweepstakes. He engineered APC victory at the centre, only to see his arch-enemies take over the posts of Speaker and Senate President in the Natiuonal Assembl...

‘Don’t Hand Over your Hope, Dream And Aspiration To Buhari’ – Bishop Kukah

Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, has warned Nigerians against overt reliance on the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. Kukah said it is dangerous to put hope and trust in Buhari and go to sleep, believing that all will be well. The cleric made the following comments on Tuesday, while delivering a lecture -‘Education and Leadership Recruitment for a Plural Society: A Case for Nigeria’- during the 3rd Convocation Ceremony of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti. Bishop Kukah said: “Fighting corruption alone may not guarantee us a stable nation. We must include the culture of entrenchment and protection of social justice and the rule of law to be part of our national live. “So, Nigeria should not put all their hopes in Buhari. They should not think that once Buhari has started fighting corruption the entire system will be sanitized and everything will work for good or change.” “A distorted society cannot expect the reward of a decent society...

Stop marrying teenage girls, BBOG spokesperson tells Nigerian leaders

Nigerian leaders have been tasked to stop marrying teenage girls, far younger than themselves if the nation must actualize its dream of protecting the girl child. Aisha Yesufu, a representative of the Bring Back Our Girls group, made the charge at a two-day national conference on the social protection of the girl child, in Abuja. She noted that it was pointless for leaders to pose as protectors of the girl child if their action tells the opposite. “If we keep saying something and doing the opposite, it makes no sense”. “If we are saying that we want to protect the girl child, and want her to go to school; then our leaders should not be seeing marrying girls who are still in school,” she said. Ms. Yesufu added that the culture which permits polygamy should not be abused by any one, especially role models in society. “A situation whereby someone already has three wives, and then goes to marry a girl who is 30 years his junior, because he is a leader; what does that say to other girls ...
