Devalue Naira, remove subsidy and ‘kill’ Nigerians

IMF Africa Director, Mrs. Atoinette Sayeh recently noted at a press conference at a World Bank event in Lima, Peru, that “…those measures introduced by CBN to restrict demand and limit access to official foreign exchange for certain imports are quite detrimental to economic activities and invariably led to a lot of unhappiness in the private sector”. File: Indeed, Naira devaluation is probably the most potent weapon against the prosperity of Nigerians. Nigeria’s migration from a potential industrial power house with bustling social affluence, to a subdued and stumbling economy clearly began with the adoption of IMF’s Structural Adjustment Programme during Babangida’s regime: the chorus from International Agencies, at that time, was also that falling oil prices with an unserviced debt burden and the consequent restriction of trade credit to Nigeria, were the products of an allegedly overvalued Naira exchange rate. Consequently, Sayeh, apparently concluded that “these measures wer...

Buhari May Share Ministerial Portfolios This Week - Adesina

President Buhari may assign portfolios to his ministers this week. The President’s Media Adviser, Mr Femi Adesina, said that it is most likely that the President finalises all plans on the list and might make final pronouncement on the matter. “Yes it is most likely that the portfolios for the new ministers may be announced this week but remember that this is entirely the President’s prerogative as he has the final say on it and once it is decided, ours is to publicize his decision,” he told Channels Television. Mr Adesina said that the list of ministers which has gone viral on the web should be disregarded as those who published those names and portfolios are merely making guesses. He said that there was nothing to worry about since Nigerians had waited long enough, they would get the best.

Senator cautions El-Rufai on utterances

Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Senator Shehu Sani has cautioned Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai over what he described as reckless statements. Senator Sani replied the governor on the Kufena Mountain saga while receiving the youth group‎ from Southern Kaduna who paid him a courtesy visit in his Kaduna Office. “The positive aspect of the Governor’s proclamation on the Kufena Mountain is that, he has put it on a national discourse and it has become a tourist attraction for people who want to see where the opposition are supposed to go climb, fall and die. “But in a serious sense, it is an irresponsible statement to have called on people who voted us into power to climb such a hill, fall and t...

Unveil your policies, Nigerians running out of patience - Kingibe tells Buhari

Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has limited time to bring the needed change in Nigeria. He said that though Buhari enjoys goodwill and respect from Nigerians, they may get out of patience soon. Kingibe in a statement at the weekend said “The task is more urgent because there is only but a limited time before impatience on the part of the public blends with resistance from vested interests and dilutes the national consciousness for change. “Fortunately, goodwill for the person of President Buhari is considerable, and people are willing to give him time to reset the country.” The running mate to late MKO Abiola in the June 12, 1993 presidential election urged Buhari to immediately make his policies clear. Advising Buhari to be prepared for resistance critics and those who would be affected by his policies for change, Kingibe said: “Looking ahead, to sustain change and overcome resistance, government must communicate very clearly – to Nigeri...

Pontiff's visit to Central African Republic may be cancelled

Apart from threatening the pope's visit, the violence might wreck plans to hold long-delayed elections in December. Pope Francis  indicated on Sunday that his planned visit to the Central African Republic this month could be cancelled if violence between Christians and Muslims there worsens. Speaking to tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square, he called for an end to the "cycle of violence" in the country he is scheduled to visit Nov. 28-29 as part of a trip that will also take him to Kenya and Uganda. Francis spoke of the "trip I hope to be able to make to that nation". He has previously simply said he would go. A senior Vatican source said the phrasing was chosen because of the violence in the capital Bangui, where the pope is scheduled to visit a mosque in one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods. "If the situation worsens, he will not be able to go and he is aware of that," the source said. Last Thursday, four people were ki...

Some of the ministers who said this include Mr. Adebayo Shittu and Professor Isaac Adewole. The ministers, who along with their colleagues are expected to be sworn in and given portfolios any moment from now, described their appointment as a call to service. Shittu, representing Oyo State at the yet-to-be-constituted Federal Executive Council, said he was ready to give his services free to Nigeria if that was what the situation demanded. Shittu, a legal practitioner and human rights activist told  SUNDAY PUNCH  that what matters is the intention to serve and not the financial benefits. He said, “It is an issue of national service. There is nothing too much to sacrifice. If that is what our situation in Nigeria demands, then we must put ourselves up selflessly. We cannot sa...
