Okiro Hopeful Police Will Stifle Extra-judicial Killings In Nigeria.

17, 2015
Mike-OkiroThe Chairman of the Police Service Commission and former Inspector General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro, has expressed optimism that cases of extra-judicial killings across the Nigeria will be a thing of the past.
The former police boss spoke at the commissioning of the renovated Ivbiotor Police Station on Dumez Road in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.
Giving likely reasons for the cases of extra-judicial killings, he said: “Many of them have been in military rule and they do not know much about democracy and the rule of law.
“We are now in a democracy and we need to train them, educate them and teach them the demands of democracy, so they will know that they have to do things that are lawful and there will be no extra-judicial killing any longer”.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris Ezike, also said that with adequate training, the Police would improve in service delivery and ensure adequate protection of lives and property.
Mr Ezike said his command had a good working relationship with the community and that the police would continue to partner with communities in the maintenance of law and order.
There have been allegations of extra-judicial killings against the Nigeria Police Force by rights groups.
On October 8, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed the arrest of a Police corporal who shot and killed a commercial driver along the Sagamu portion of the  Benin-Ore Expressway.
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, said that the suspected killer would be made to face the full wrath of the law as the Police authority would no longer condone any act of impunity and indiscipline from men and officers of the command
