PDP senators vow to withdraw support for Saraki if Amaechi is confirmed

ABUJA —  Senators belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and their All Progressives Congress, APC, were, yesterday, preparing for a showdown over different positions on the confirmation of two of 16 remaining ministerial nominees. It was, however, learnt that Senate President Bukola Saraki was determined to weigh in on behalf of the former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi and the ministerial nominee from Cross River State, Usani Uguru. The duo had been caught up in a grudge war mounted by PDP senators. Amaechi is held in contempt by the PDP Senate caucus for his role in the defeat of the former ruling party in the last round of elections. Uguru brought himself into the bad book of the PDP Senate caucus when, during his screening, he said “God forbid” to a question as to his membership of the PDP. Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets trash Australia 6-0

The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria are through to the quarter finals of the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile following their 6-0 demolition of Australia early Thursday morning. A hat trick from Victor Osimhen and other goals from the trio of Kelechi Nwakali, Edidiong Michael Essien and then Samuel Chukwueze ensured that Nigeria maintained her long time dominance over the Aussies who were initially seen as a tricky side. While the early exchanges in the Round of 16 clash at the Estadio SausalitoVina Del Mar were initially balanced, the Eaglets required just three minutes to pull away. In the 22nd minute, Osimhen set the tone for the day’s goals feast when he surged forward with pace and power on the left, before turning his defender and sliding the ball impressively inside the far post. Barely three minutes later, Nigeria’s lead was doubled up when Funsho Bamgboye was brought down in the penalty area, and Nwakali coolly slotted home the resultant penalty. Nigeria continued t...

Our Economy Has Taken A Nosedive – Ezekwesili

A former minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has compared Nigeria’s current economic situation to that of 1982 during the regime of ex-president, Shehu Shagari. Speaking in Lagos, the former minister stressed that the situation surrounding the economic, social and political sectors is precarious, admitting, however, that managing such situations would be really difficult for the government. “We have found ourselves in a situation where every sector is in a precarious situation,” Ezekwesili was quoted by Vanguard to have said. “We are operating on uncertainty and it is very difficult. Our economy has taken a nosedive, and I ask how it is possible for Nigeria to find itself in this embarrassing situation. “Nigerians must study history because people who do not study history risk repeating all the mistakes made in the past.” Former Central Bank Governor and Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, had also said that the country was heading for recession with the way the country’s ...

Emir Sanusi Sacks Late Ado Bayero’s Eldest Son As Ciroman Kano

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has removed Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero, the eldest son of the late Emir of Kano, as the Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale. In his stead, the emir appointed Bayero’s younger brother, Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero, to the position. The elder Bayero was said to have had a running battle with Sanusi following his emergence as Emir of Kano. A statement yesterday in Kano by the Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, said Sanusi Ado Bayero was stri*ped of the title because of his alleged refusal to pay homage to the emir, as stipulated by Sharia. Ciroman Kano is the title of a prominent member of the Kano Emirate Council, who is traditionally a close ally of the emir. The statement reads: “It was the provision of the Sharia law and custom that had compelled every member of the Kano Emirate Council to be loyal to the new king, following the demise of the former monarch… God, in His infinite wisdom, gives power to whom He wishes and takes i...

Buhari, Jonathan, Amaechi, Osinbajo Define Corruption

Corruption is one of the biggest challenges crippling Nigeria. It is a known fact to every Nigerian that the level corruption is on the high side. If you take a critical look, it is glaring that corruption has eaten deep into every sector, be it in the schools, offices, ministries and the list goes on. Be it a small or big sector, there is every possibility of observing corrupt practices. In schools students offer bribe to pass their exams, lectures demand bribe from students. In the ministries, there is the ghost worker syndrome. In politics, one cannot even begin to count the number of corrupt cases against Nigerian politicians. You see policemen extorting money from innocent citizens and some have been killed for refusing to give bribe. At the end of the day, the police calls it accidental discharge. The menace of corruption rears its ugly head during elections, at the court of law, even the churches are not left out. Nigeria has been ranked one of the most corrupt countr...
