Answer to the question “Who is ready for marriage?”

By Francis Ewherido As part of the Valentine celebration, the Young Christian Workers (YCW) of my parish invited me to talk to them last Saturday on the above topic. Now who is ready for marriage? One, legally and biologically, marriage is for somebody who is matured, that is, about 18 years and above. They say your morning begins when you wake up, so when to get married and start a family are personal choices, influenced by your finances, when you meet your fiancé(e), your priorities, among other factors. But I am an advocate of early marriage and my favoured years for marriage are: Men, between 25 and 28 years, and 20 to 25 years for women, all things being equal. Two, marriage is for mature people and mature people are independent. As I wrote previously, marriage is an interdependent institution that only independent people should go into. In other words, there should be self-mastery and victory over self, because, as Stephen Covey rightly observed, “private victories must prece...

Charges on cash deposits, withdrawals, reintroduced by CBN

Central Bank of Nigeria on Thursday announced the reintroduction of bank charges on certain categories of cash deposits and withdrawals. This came about three years after the apex bank stopped the charges. In a circular to all Deposit Money Banks posted on its website, the regulator said the decision to reintroduce the charges on cash deposits was part of the review of charges on deposits and withdrawals under the cashless policy. It said the decision was taken at the Bankers’ Committee meeting, which held in Abuja two weeks ago. The circular, signed by Director, Banking and Payments System Department, CBN, Mr. Dipo Fatokun, stated that the committee decided that the cashless policy should be extended to the remaining 30 states of the federation. It also directed that with effect from April 1, 2017, banks in the states where the cashless policy was already operating, Lagos, Ogun, Anambra, Abia, Kano, Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory, would begin to impose charges...

Big win for space life as Earth-size planets where life is possible are found

Astronomers have found a nearby solar system with seven Earth-sized planets, three of which circle their parent star at the right distance for liquid surface water, bolstering the prospect of discovering extraterrestrial life, research published on Wednesday showed. The star, known as TRAPPIST-1, is a small, dim celestial body in the constellation Aquarius. It is located about 40 light years away from Earth, close by astronomical standards, but about 44 million years away at the average cruising speed of a commercial passenger jet. Researchers said the proximity of the system, combined with the proportionally large size of its planets compared to the small star, make it a good target for follow-up studies. They hope to scan the planets' atmospheres for possible chemical fingerprints of life. "The discovery gives us a hint that finding a second Earth is not just a matter of if, but when,” NASA chief scientist Thomas Zurbuchen said at a news conference on Wednesday. ...
