FIFA Presidency: No Nigerian in sight as deadline ends

All the talk of a Nigerian Presidency of the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) yesterday ended like  hot air blown into a balloon, with the deadline for submission of nomination expired last night, with neither  Segun Odegbami nor Orji Uzor Kalu submitting their forms, as at press time. The two Nigerian gladiators, the former, a 1980 Nations Cup winner and the latter, a two-time Governor of Abia State, had in the last couple of months been involved a two-way battle to get the nod of the Amaju Pinnick-led Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation to run for the biggest office in world football. Odegbami and Kalu Since it became clear that Sepp Blatter’s successor would emerge at an extraordinary congress next February 26, the race for the plum job has assumed an intense and frenetic pace, with many self-professed football buffs entering the fray, with little or no understanding of the dynamics involved to aspire for the position. ...

Rivers Re-run Polls Split Senators Over Amaechi

ABUJA—AHEAD of today’s screening and confirmation of the remaining ministerial nominees, senators of All Progressives Congress, APC, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have mapped out strategies on how to achieve their set goals. Amaechi at the senate While PDP senators have allegedly resolved to frustrate the confirmation of former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, their APC counterparts have vowed to ensure that Amaechi is confirmed. The PDP senators are said to be worried that with the confirmation of Amaechi as minister, he would wield so much influence and power in the politics of his native home state, Rivers, if a re-run is to be held. This is coming as the report of the Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led Senate Committee on Ethics Privileges and Public Petitions, on petitions against Amaechi, is to be considered today. It will be recalled that the report was, last Thursday, presented during plenary but was not considered even though Amaechi was screened, where PDP senators refused...

6 Money Lessons We Wish We Learned in School

Your high school teachers won't educate you on living frugally, marketing yourself to a prospective employer or understanding the value of compound interest. Financial literacy is a big problem in the United States. In a recent study, only 9.4% of American students performed at the top level in a financial literacy test that included such tasks as calculating the balance on a bank statement and interpreting income tax brackets. In a perfect system, our children would learn everything they need to know about personal finance in school, but that unfortunately isn’t the case. With that in mind, here are six of the most important financial lessons young people should learn before entering their adult lives. Matt Frankel :  As a former high school math teacher, I could ramble off a list of 100 financial lessons that we  should  be teaching in school. However, I think that more lessons about compound interest could be beneficial — but unfortunately no significant time i...

EFCC grills Akpabio’s accuser for several hours.

Akpabio The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday invited and grilled an Abuja-based lawyer, Mr. Leo Ekpeyong, who wrote a petition to the commission against a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio. Investigations revealed that the operatives of the Economic Governance Unit of the commission invited Ekpeyong to report at the commission to shed more light on the allegations he raised against Akpabio in the petition. In the petition, Ekpeyong had accused Akpabio of massive diversion of funds of the Akwa Ibom State Government when he was governor of the state. Based on the allegations contained in the petition, the EFCC invited and grilled the former governor, who is now Senate’s Minority Leader, on October 16, 2015. Although Akpabio was released on bail on the first day of his interrogation, he was asked to return to the commission the next day when he was interrogated for hours. The former governor is now awaiting further...

Nyesom Wike     The Supreme Court will on Tuesday deliver a judgment on whether or not the Rivers State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal which nullified the election of Governor Nyesom Wike on Saturday had the jurisdiction to hear the case against the governor. The Justice Mohammed Ambrosa-led tribunalhad on Saturday nullified Wike’s election as it upheld allegations by the All Progressives Congress and its governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside, that the election which held on April 11, 2015 was conducted in substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act.But Saturday’s judgment would amount to nullity if the Supreme Court holds on Tuesday that the proceedings of the tribunal had been conducted without requisite jurisdiction.
